An 11 week term is a long one and pretty tiring all round, especially with interviews coming up. We have been working hard on descriptive writing. Here is an example from one student who had a lot less interesting things to say but made more of it. From this, (a whole story in February)...
In the Holidays me my mum and sister we went to this beach called Maketu when we got there we went for heaps of swims then we Played Playstation, up at my cousin's House, it was awesome. And every morning we would wake up and go for a swim. to this (one whole story, in June)... Waking up on a beautiful Sunday morning, I was feeling so lazy I couldn't even move. I felt like a fly stuck to a spider's web. Finally after five minutes I got up and changed into my cool clothes. Suddenly I stood up and I walked down the hallway, still feeling quite sleepy. I turned into the bathroom and had a wash. I walked into the kitchen, hoping that my mum had made me breakfast. After all, my mum did catch a good night's sleep. I had stayed up and watched a movie called World War Z - it was very scary and I wondered 'how did they make the zombies look so real?' They must have needed some good makeup artists. Anyway it gave me nightmares...that's why I had a bad sleep. I did not know what mum had made me for breakfast but once I heard the Nutra-Grain hitting the bowl like machine guns shooting, it reminded me of the movie I watched which reminded me about my nightmare. I sat down at the table and noticed the boiling jug, it looked like the water was going for the world record for the fastest evaporating water, but at that moment I realised that mum was making me a drinking chocolate. The students have also been working hard on describing strange creatures. Check out their blogs for more. Also, look out for newsletters and make sure you have made your interview appointment or contacted me. You need to come in to collect your child's progress portfolio - all other information is going to be uploaded soon onto their portfolio page in their blogs. Finally, check out the concepts tab above... discovery is our focus in terms 3 and 4. Talk with your child about what things do they want to learn to do and what things they want to discover. Please support them as they finish off this terms work and prepare to share their poems and pepeha. Thankyou. CONGRATULATIONS to Te Aroha H and Freyja at the BOP cross country - a TOP effort! See this weeks newsletter for details. Room 12 have been working on projects and on deepening their understanding of the causes and effects of pollution in streams and what changes there have been over time for people near the stream, like those at Ohinemutu, where the decreasing quality of the stream has had a big impact. Soon we will be putting up the signs that some of our students and Marc Spijkerbosch painted. They look great! Here we have some students hard at work painting the signs they designed and putting in the finishing touches while those who are finished check out the other group's efforts.
We've had a lot of 'Back to Basics' lately as the wet weather has set in. In the fine breaks we are fitting in skipping for our fitness and as our skills improve we will get into doing double dutch style skipping. This is a great way to get our heart rates up and fun too. Most of the class are learning their basic facts for our school-wide MATHATHON (Check your child's bag if you haven't seen the details!) and we are well underway on our personalised writing projects. We will also be posting photos soon of some of our recent artwork.
We have some VERY talented people in our room, in the Arts, in Science, Writing, Maths, and... Congratulations to our top and very fast Cross country runners - Ariariterangi, Tiakitai and Elijah (Year 6 boys 1st, 4th and just out of the top 4), and Freyja and Te Aroha Healey-Forde (1st and 2nd Year 5 girls). I also want to acknowledge every student in the class that put in a big effort, I was proud to see that it was most of you! Congratulations also go to Ariariterangi and Dontay who represented Rm 12 in the Malfroy School team that went to the recent Bay wide Rippa Rugby tournament - they got into the semi-finals (so top 4). Six of our class are also practising hard to see if they will make the Newsteam and several will be trying out for the Rotomaths team soon. There is a lot going on! Keep checking back to see what is happening and look out for the school newsletter or find it on the Malfroy School Website. |
